Canon HG10 AVCHD 40GB High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom Description
- Captures AVCHD Format High Definition Digital Video to Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
- Using AVCHD, the ultra-efficient codec for High Definition, the HG10 records High Definition video to a hard disk drive (HDD) for longer recording time, ultimate HD quality, and superior ease in viewing your footage in playback mode or on your TV or computer. Precision engineering ensures the HDD's durability and resistance to impact and vibration. AVCHD is the very latest standard developed for High Definition. By compressing video twice as efficiently as conventional methods, the AVCHD standard enables High Definition video to be recorded on a hard disk drive.
The camcorder's HDMI terminal is the new standard in HD connection, transporting a High Definition video signal with audio in one cable to your HD TV. The HG10 HD Camcorder comes equipped with a Backup Utility Disc, enabling users to safely backup recorded video onto a computer's hard drive.

Super-Range Optical Image Stabilizer |
- Genuine Canon Optics - 10x High Definition Video Lens
- With more than 70 years of expertise in manufacturing lenses for professional broadcast and still photography, the Canon name represents optical excellence. The HG10 features a Genuine Canon 10x HD Video Zoom Lens designed specifically to capture crisp high definition video. The HG10's 10x HD Video Zoom Lens delivers full HD image quality, with an aspherical lens for low aberration, super spectra coating technology to reduce flare and ghosting, and a gradation ND system for excellent exposure in bright light.
- Super-Range Optical Image Stabilizer
- Canon's sophisticated SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer corrects camcorder shake instantly to ensure steady shooting, even for hand-held video at long focal lengths and shots taken with the camcorder in motion as well as photos. The system uses two detection methods (gyro and vector) to sense the widest range of vibrations from hand-held shake, to vibration from a moving vehicle. By using optical stabilization, it can compensate for a greater degree of camera shake and avoid any loss in image quality, unlike electronic image stabilizers. It is even effective for both video and photos.

CMOS Sensor |
- Canon True HD CMOS Sensor (1920 x 1080)
- Canon's expertise in designing and manufacturing CMOS image sensors for its line of EOS Digital SLR cameras is now available in the Canon HG10 HDV camcorder. The 2.96 Megapixel CMOS sensor captures true HD information at 1920 x 1080, giving your images the ultimate in realistic detail. Canon's advanced noise reduction technology, ensures the purity of each pixel even in dim light, minimizing noise and other aberrations. It incorporates an RGB Primary Color Filter with Bayer placement to deliver a sharp HD image with vibrant and accurate color reproduction.
- RGB Primary Color Filter
- The HG10's True HD CMOS Sensor's RGB Primary Color Filter separates the light passing through the lens into individual red, green, and blue color components, the same color filtration used in professional 3 CCD camcorders. As a result, the HG10 deliver richer, more vibrant, and more accurate color reproduction than models using a conventional complementary color filter.

DIGIC DV II Image Processor |
- DIGIC DV II Image Processor
- The HG10 features DIGIC DV II, Canon's proprietary image processor, designed specifically for HD video and photos. DIGIC DV II provides highly accurate color and tonal reproduction needed for exceptional HD image quality. A new noise reduction system, combined with a new gamma system, helps to reduce noise in monotone and shadow areas. The fast processing speed of the DIGIC DV II chip allows video and photos to be shot simultaneously. Furthermore, the processor lowers power consumption, providing longer battery life.
- Instant AF
- Since achieving sharp focus is critical when shooting in High Definition, the HG10 features Canon's revolutionary Instant AF focusing system. It offers a dramatic improvement in auto focus speed and accuracy (compared to traditional autofocus systems). An external sensor works in combination with Canon's proven high-performance internal AF system to dramatically reduce focusing time and increase accuracy. It is especially effective when shooting at night, in high-brightness conditions or when following a moving subject. The high resolution of HD video makes focus more critical than ever, and Canon's Instant AF helps videographers capture HD images with expert precision.
- Convenient HDMI Terminal
- The HG10 allows easy connection to today's latest HD televisions through its HDMI Terminal. Only one cable is needed to output a pure digital signal (video and audio) for the ultimate viewing experience.
- Quick Start Button
- The HG10 features a Quick Start button that places the camcorder in standby mode. Pressing the button again makes it ready for immediate use. The Quick Start button conserves battery power and ensures you'll never miss a shot: the ultimate in convenience.
- 24p Cinema Mode
- 24p Cinema Mode enables all aspiring moviemakers to achieve a professional film-like look. You can change the camcorder's frame rate to 24p, which provides the same frame rate as movie film. In addition, you can use the HG10's CINE setting, which changes the color and tonal characteristics, evoking the look and feel of a movie shown in a theater. For added flexibility, these settings can be used together, or independently.
- 3.1 Megapixel Photos
- The HG10 Camcorder is also an advanced Canon camera. Capture beautifully detailed 3.1 Megapixel still shots onto a miniSD card. Record a 2.0 Megapixel image while you're shooting video. You can also 'grab' a 2.0 Megapixel still from your footage during playback. Other high-end still camera features include: 9-point AiAF that sharply focuses even off-center subjects, a built-in flash for superior shots indoors and in low light, Histogram Display to give you the brightness information you need to make adjustments on successive shots, and one-touch printing and downloading of your images with a Print & Share button.
- Flexible 2.7" Widescreen LCD Screen and Widescreen Color Viewfinder
- The 2.7-inch Multi-Angle Vivid Widescreen LCD on the HG10 lets you see more of what your camcorder is recording. Using a hard coat AR surface and improved color reproduction, the scene in the LCD is more accurate to what you're capturing in the camcorder. Zoom in and/or enhance a subject's outline for perfect manual focus with the Focus Assist Button. Check your shots against the horizontal marker lines with Level Shot Control. Achieve professional-looking balance with easily visible Grid Markers.
- Random Access and Easy Editing
- The HG10's ability to record direct to HDD offers many advantages. You'll never tape over a once-in-a life time piece of footage: and movies are always recorded to a blank part of the HDD. And there's no need to rewind or fast forward. The HG10 is bundled with a powerful software suite from Corel (compatible with Windows XP and Vista). You can easily perform a variety of functions, including AVCHD Editing in which you can trim, reorder and combine scenes, as well as add music, titles and transitions. When finished, you can burn your edited video onto either a full size AVCHD or Standard Definition DVD.
- 9 Point AiAF (Auto Intelligent Auto Focus)
- The sophisticated autofocus system lets you put your subject almost anywhere in the frame. The intelligent AiAF system reads information from 9 separate points. This makes it possible to frame shots without being constrained by the subject's position.
- HDD Still Photo Grab from Video
- If a great shot happens while you're shooting video, simply press the photo button to record a 2.0 Megapixel image. With the new Photo Grabbing feature, you can also 'grab' a 2.0 Megapixel still from your footage just by pressing a button in playback.
- Auto Exposure Modes Including Aperture and Shutter Priority
- Like any good digital still camera, the HG10 lets you choose from a range of exposure modes. Auto mode automatically sets the exposure, letting you concentrate on your subject. Av (aperture priority) mode lets you control depth of field by letting you choose the aperture. Tv (shutter priority) mode lets you select the shutter speed for sharp, action shots. In P (program) mode, the camcorder adjusts camera settings automatically.
- Histogram Display
- The HG10 has an advanced Histogram Display which lets you fine-tune the exposure of your still images by viewing the brightness of your photos as you shoot- just as in Canon's line of digital SLR cameras.
- Built-in Flash with Red-Eye Reduction
- The built-in flash fires according to the brightness of the surrounding area. Use it to illuminate your subjects when taking photos at night or indoors. It can also fill in shadows when shooting in bright sunlight. There are 4 modes: Auto, Red-eye reduction Auto, Flash on, and Flash off.
- Direct Print
- Print directly from your camcorder, making it simple, quick and convenient to produce high quality photos, just by connecting to any PictBridge compatible printer.
- 0.27-inch Wide EVF
- In addition to the 2.7-inch Multi-Angle Vivid Widescreen LCD screen, the HG10's EVF lets you see exactly what your camcorder is recording, and what your TV will display later. The .27-inch EVF provides a 123,000-pixel image.
- USB 2.0 High Speed Terminal
- Allows high-speed transfer of images from your Mini SD Memory Card or MultiMediaCard to your computer.
- Level Shot Control and Grid Marker
- Level Shot Control enables you to make more professional looking video with your HG10 by keeping the camcorder level. A horizontal marker appears in your viewfinder when you press the Level Shot Control button. Line up any horizontal lines in your shot -- such as the horizon -- to the marker and you can be sure your camcorder is level. The HG10's Grid Marker feature assists you in composing a more accurate shot by using the grid in your viewfinder. For maximum visibility no matter the background of the shot, you can choose from two different colors for the grid so it will stand out from the image.
- Focus Assist
- With the image quality of High Definition, a properly focused subject is more critical than ever. The Focus Assist function of the HG10 ensures sharp focus by zooming into your image so you can focus on a close up view of your subject. This is the equivalent of the manual method used by professional videographers and photographers.
- Built-in Ultra Video Light
- The HG10 camcorder is equipped with a bright Ultra Video Light, so you can keep shooting in low light conditions up to 4.9 feet away.
- Variable Zoom Speed Control
- Allows you to zoom at a constant speed, for a polished look. The HG10 ensures smooth professional zooms with 5 zoom speed presets.
- Program AE With 8 Special Scene Modes
- The HG10 will let you choose settings which automatically give you the best exposures for various situations. Each one adjusts the camcorders parameters to best compensate for the lighting conditions and subjects:
- Portrait - The camera sets a large aperture, focuses the subject and artistically blurs the background to make your subject "pop".
- Sports - Ensures highly accurate autofocusing when shooting fast-moving subjects for capturing beautiful action shots.
- Night - Capture people against a softly glowing night background without a tripod.
- Snow - Shoot clear snow scenes without darkened subjects and bluish tint.

- Fireworks - Grab brilliant images of skyrocketing fireworks.
- Electronic Lens Cover
- Automatically opens when the camcorder is turned on, and closes when it is turned off, so there is no dangling lens cover to lose.
- Advanced Accessory Shoe Terminal
- An Advanced Accessory Shoe lets you attach optional accessories such as a video light or directional microphone, without additional wires or batteries.
- Mic and Headphone Terminals
- The HG10 features microphone and headphone terminals for added flexibility.
- Navigation Control Dial
- The HG10 features a new Navigation Control Dial on the LCD panel, enabling users to access the menu easier for improved operability and enhanced ability to search for scenes.
- miniSD Memory Card Slot
- You can share your photos, thanks to the camcorder's miniSD™ Memory Card. Popularly used in today's newest cell phones and half the size of a standard SD card, the miniSD Card offers the benefit of high-capacity storage in a very small size.
