Optical Image Stabilizer

Camera shake is common when shooting in low light and at long focal lengths, and can result in blurred images. The PowerShot G9 is equipped with an advanced Optical Image Stabilizer that uses sensors to detect camera shake and signal precise lens shifts that effectively cancel it. This technology allows the G9 to take excellent-quality images in many more situations -- outdoors at dusk, inside without a flash, anytime when lighting conditions are not ideal.

The PowerShot G9's Lens-Shift type optical image stabilization system is based on advancements made in the development of Canon's EF lenses and video lenses. Unlike electronic or digital image stabilization systems that typically degrade image quality, the PowerShot G9 digital camera's lens shift-type preserves maximum optical performance while providing up to three stops of shake correction in shutter speed equivalent.

3.0" PureColor LCD II Monitor With Wide Viewing Angle and 15 Brightness Settings

The PowerShot G9's 230,000 pixel 3.0-inch PureColor LCD II features improved contrast and color reproduction, which greatly increases the viewing angle for composing shots above or below the head. 15 brightness settings make it easier to read the display menus and easier to preview and review subjects and scenes. On the face of the LCD, there is a protective cover finished with multiple coatings to prevent smudging, scratches and reflection. The LCD screen offers a tremendous live preview of your image with all shooting data displayed. It even offers a real-time histogram to help fine-tune exposure and it can display the camera's ISO, aperture and shutter speed.

Advanced Face Detection AF/AE/FE Technology and Red-Eye Correction

With Canon's new Face Detection AF/AE/FE function, the camera can detect, lock on, and track multiple human faces in a scene. The face detection algorithm automatically prioritizes and selects faces (based on Canon's Intelligent Scene Analysis/iSAPS technology). It will then optimize the focus, exposure and flash to help ensure the best possible results for even easier picture taking moments. The result is flattering portraits and group shots where all of the subjects are in clearer focus and accurately exposed.

Compared to previous Canon cameras with Face Detection technology, the PowerShot G9 digital camera adds several improvements, including the ability to use the function for movies as well as still images, the ability to detect faces that are further away or not aimed directly at the camera, and better control of flash exposure. Working with the camera's Face Detection technology, Canon's new Red-eye Correction feature helps detect and corrects, during playback mode, that bothersome by-product of flash photography. Images can be corrected manually while viewing photos on the LCD screen to help vanquish red-eye, once and for all. Because most images will no longer require laborious post-processing with a computer, the new in-camera Red-eye Correction feature is ideal for direct printing.

And new Face Selector AF enables you to lock on and follow a specific face. The selected subject is tracked wherever the face moves in the frame. Simply press the Face Selector Button; then the selected face is double-framed and tracked when the face moves in the frame.

DIGIC III Image Processor

Canon's exclusive DIGIC III Image Processor builds on the technological superiority of DIGIC and DIGIC II, taking image quality, performance and speed to new levels. DIGIC III provides a speedier interface for the PowerShot G9's SD memory card, reduces noise at high ISO settings, extends battery life with lower power consumption, offers higher definition for the LCD monitor, and empowers exciting new technologies like Face Detection AF/AE.

Canon developed the proprietary DIGIC (Digital Imaging Integrated Circuit) Image Processor specifically for use with its line of digital cameras. The technology combines the jobs of image processing and camera function control into one chip. 9-point AiAF and FlexiZone AF/AE With AF Frame Size Selection

In fully automatic modes, the camera defaults to a 9-point AiAF system that evaluates a much larger percentage of the picture area than the 3-point system used in earlier models. This makes it easier and quicker for the camera to detect the main subject, even when it is considerably off-center. The PowerShot G9 offers manual focus in addition to a full range of autofocus options. FlexiZone AF allows you to move a single AF point around the frame. Continuous shooting AF freezes moving subjects in their tracks and allows you to manually focus without changing the mode.

The PowerShot G9 features Canon's newest evolution in focus: AF Frame size selection. Canon iSAPS Technology

Over the past 70 years, Canon has accumulated a vast amount of photographic data and know-how and used it to create some of the most innovative camera products in the marketplace. Now, using that same data and know-how, Canon has developed an exclusive technology called iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) that can predict certain camera settings such as focusing distance, exposure and optimum white balance based on zoom focal length, overall light level and tonal distribution data. Canon refers to this collective data as "Photographic Space." By incorporating iSAPS technology into its PowerShot line, the cameras can analyze a scene just before the image is made and in doing so, increase the speed and precision of the camera's autofocus, auto exposure and auto white balance.

Powerful Built-in Flash

For creative flash photography, the PowerShot G9 digital camera includes a built-in flash with red-eye reduction, FE lock and Safety FE. The flash can be operated manually or automatically.

E-TTL External Flash Compatibility

Thanks to its built-in hot shoe, the PowerShot G9 works seamlessly with Canon's EX Series Speedlite flashes and has access to their features through the camera's LCD. The G9 can use FP flash, FE lock, FE compensation, and even manual flash metering (with Speedlite 580EX II attached), extending the G9's use as a powerful, creative photographic tool. The hot shoe accommodates the Speedlite 580EX II, 580EX, 430EX and 220EX. All of the external flash units with E-TTL metering capabilities add more range and speed. Manual Focus, Safety MF

For critical focus, the PowerShot G9 offers manual focusing. When engaged, the center of the frame is enlarged on the G9's 3.0-inch LCD, allowing you to select the exact distance at which you wish to focus. Safety MF helps during manual focus by performing fine adjustments when pressing the shutter button half way.

Continuous Shooting

Continuous shooting mode settings to accommodate the broadest range of shooting situations in easy access. In normal mode, it shoots at approximately 1.5 fps; in AF mode, it can shoot 0.7 fps while maintaining proper focus; in LV mode it can shoot 0.8 fps with manual focus in Large/Fine mode.

Safety Shift

The PowerShot G9's refined Safety Shift feature ensures that exposures will come out correctly, no matter the setting. For example if you choose a particular shutter speed in Shutter-priority mode and the light level does not permit the camera to set a correct aperture value, the G9 will modify the shutter speed to achieve a correct exposure.

AF/FE Lock

It features a dedicated AE/FE lock, which enables you to set the exposure (with or without flash) and then recompose and focus the camera, while maintaining the chosen exposure parameters. It's perfect for use in tricky lighting situations.

My Colors Feature For Color Customization

Canon's My Colors mode provides PowerShot G9 users with an incredible range of creative photo effects, which can be accessed directly from the camera with no need for post-processing in a computer.
